Who Wore It Better - City of Ashes

Who Wore It Better is a meme created and hosted by Nitzan at The Book Babes Read and co-hosted here on Beautiful Bookish Butterflies by Amanda and Stacie. We don't talk about clothing or fashion and we definitely don't talk frills and spills, we talk books and their covers and who we think has the best. This week, Stacie is talking about the covers for City of Ashes, book #2 in the Mortal Instruments series. It is also Stacie's first time taking part in WWIB, she always has an opinion on covers and hopes to bring something to the already great and established meme..

The Covers

Cover #1 - Original UK Edition
Cover #2 - Bulgarian Edition
Cover #3 - German Edition
Cover #4 - Czech Edition
Cover #5 - French Edition
Cover #6 - Polish Edition

My Thoughts

Probably a bit of a shock to everyone but my favourite covers of the series was always the original UK one. (I say original because it's all I ever knew and as far as I know they didn't change the style till the 3rd one).  I think the thing I like the most about the cover is how suitable it is, but also having read the story I would say that it having Jace (or so it would seem) on it suits it more, the first book was more about Clary finding out who she was and if you ask me, the 2nd one was more about Jace coming to terms with everything. It may have been in the background because obviously Clary is the main character but I like to think its where we see his character really development and for that I think the first one is better suited.

When it comes to cover #2, #3 and #4, the reason I chose to pick those higher over the others or even over the more widely known cover is because of how pretty they are and how well the covers come together. The Bulgarian cover is so much like the one that everyone knows and loves, while still being bright and in your face, however I didnt like how the images of the buildings and the girl in the background don't seem to blend with each other as well as the girl and building do on the English cover that people associate with the books. I love how mysterious the German and Czech covers are, giving you the illusion of a world underneath our own without giving anything to the story away and I really do think it works well.

And lastly, the French and Polish covers. To say I didn't like them would be a little bit too mean, because they had their good points. The French one focusing on the boy and girl (Jace and Clary..) in some obvious intimate pose without actually touching and though it fits perfectly with the story it doesn't offer anything else. The love between characters may be a very important part of the story but it isn't the only thing in it. And the Polish?... I don't get it. The girl on the cover is dressed provocatively, something Clary very rarely did but that's not the most confusing thing, she has tattoo's on her arms, they are all pretty flowers and colourful.. but they aren't runes! So yeah.. I just don't like it because it seems so far from Clary as it could be.

Your Thoughts

I won't give you a list of things to answer, because not everyone wants to answer them. However I would like to know what book cover you like the best and why, and if your thoughts were swayed because you know what happens in the story. If you don't have an answer, than thank you for reading mine anyway :)

  1. I've never seen any of these covers before - I have the set that everyone would be familiar with now. Have to say though, I quite like cover 4 - I like the city-landscape and the colours.

    1. I like the landscape cover too. I think pretty much everyone has the covers that everyone knows and that’s ok, I like that I was able to show others there was one before it haha

  2. It's funny how much difference a book cover can make on whether or not you pick up a book - I would definitely be attracted to checking out covers 2 and 3 if I saw them in a bookshop, and yet I wouldn't even look twice at number 5. They look like they're from completely different genres!

Loving the new blog so far you guys :)

    1. It is, isn't it?. I think it's something that a lot more publishers are actually taking on board and we aren't seeing such hideous covers lately haha

  3. THAT FRENCH ONE THOUGH. I can't stop laughing because I'm so confused. I just don't get it.

I like the covers that we all know of but I kind of also like that French one.

    1. LOL I KNOW JESS!! I couldn’t get my head around it, it's so different and not at all anything to do with the story. (apart from there being a girl in it, they didn't even get the hair colour right haha)

  5. Honestly, I'm not really a fan of any of them. I like the bright colors of #2, but like you said the composition just seems off. Maybe if it blended more? Then I might for sure pick that one.

    1. I would like it more if it was blended, even though I have a soft spot in my heart from cover 1 I would probably picked cover 2 if it just looked nicer.

  6. I have to agree with Dreams on this, I don't really like any of these. The original covers are actually my least favourite. I actually refused to buy them in at work UNTIL I could get the newer covers. Out of all of those I'd say I prefer number 2 for the colours, but I'm still not a huge fan.

    1. Haha that's ok if you didn't like the original, I think it really is because one the series started out that's all I knew and I loved them so they will always been my favourite.
