Who Wore It Better is a meme created and hosted by Nitzan at The Book Babes Read and co-hosted here on Beautiful Bookish Butterflies by Amanda and Stacie. We don't talk about clothing or fashion and we definitely don't talk frills and spills, we talk books and their covers and who we think has the best. This week, Amanda's talking about the covers for Light, book #6 in the Gone series. Yet another series that Amanda really should have read by now, it's popular and well loved, so maybe she'll consider it next year, who knows..
The Covers
Cover #1 - International Special Edition
Cover #2 - UK Edition
Cover #3 - Ebook Edition
Cover #4 - US Edition
Cover #5 - Spanish Edition
Cover #6 - German Edition
My Thoughts
Thoughts.. Let me gather them. Nope, I'm all out of thoughts..
I'm kidding, but really, half of these covers look either 'quite good' or 'err..' and the other half range from 'whut?' to 'nkthnxbye'. What is with some really terrible covers lately with series? Think there needs to be a real shake up when it comes to book covers, or we're seriously looking at the wrong ones.. Anyhow. Covers #1,#2 and #3 I actually like and find quite intriguing. I myself own Gone in the same edition as Cover #2 and I have to admit to finding the colours on the spines and the simplistic look to be really quite outstanding in the book cover field, and Cover #3 really doesn't look that bad, I just don't understand the helicopters - why?! But Cover #1 just looks amazing. I don't know why it does or how, but it looks fantastic - it's eerie, it's intriguing, it's not showy but looks the part and it keeps with a simple design. How fantastic, and the other covers in that design look brilliant too, I'm impressed.
The last three just disappoint me hugely. I've always found the original US/International(?) covers to be really bad and the most cliche of covers - young adult book does not equate to 'lets have young adult models on the cover just to make sure that people know it's for kids like them' - jeez guys, we know it, stop plastering people on the covers, AND just people, gimme something else.. The Spanish Edition, Cover #5 does have similarities to Cover #4, but it just looks worse. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? Nope. Cover #6, what even?
Yeah, without a doubt Cover #1, followed closely by Cover #2 for sure.
Your Thoughts
Have you read this series? Did you like it? Are you tempted to dip your toe like I am? What do you think of the covers, good or bad or plain terrible? Leave me your thoughts and don't be afraid to leave ideas for following WWIB's, the more ideas, the more posts you get.
As I've never read the series I'm not sure what significance some of the covers could have to the story, but I like number 2 the best. Like you said, the simplicity of it added to the colours of the pages in the hardback covers (not sure if its a special addiction or not but I have see them floating around at I want them on that basses alone haha)
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about cover 4, it's really unimaginative and where as number 1 and 2 give nothing really away, but still leave you interested in the story, all number 4 tells you is there's going to be a male and female main character. It's silly.
As I've already stated, haven't read the books so I would know if number 4 and 6 have anything to do with them, and for that reason I can't judge them, however I do like number 3 and think the colours with the bold letters and the helicopters are rather cool haha. But that's just me :P
Great post this week :)
It's really quite a good looking book and I haven't read this series myself yet, but will at some point.
DeleteThank you hunny, can't wait to work with you on some in the future! :D
I haven't read this series, so I have no idea if these covers fits the book, but I actually really like cover 6. It's a bit weird, but that's also what I like about it and it's like the point of view in centered underground and you only realize it's underground when you look at the top. I think it's cleverly done. Just like you I like the simplistic look of the first 3 covers, while cover 4 and 5 don't really do it for me. They just look like any other generic YA book out there and don't give any hint about the contenbt beisde the fact that it's about Young Adults.
ReplyDeleteReally? Wow, that has surprised, but I can see your point really, it does give the whole top/under idea doesn't it?
DeleteGeneric is not always good so it's good to have the UK covers a little more exciting I think :)
I have to admit that I don't really love any of the covers. I kind of like the cover #2 editions of the series because they are really simple. But I HATE the US edition on 4... they are soooooo hideous! I don't know how anyone saw that cover and thought that it was a book they wanted to read, haha.
ReplyDeleteYeah, me neither, they don't wow me that much.. I do think they could do with an interesting redesign :)
DeleteI don't love these, either.
ReplyDeleteI have nominated you for the cake tag :) Check it out here: http://takeawalkonthewriteside.blogspot.it
Thank you Sofia, I'll check it out! :)
DeleteI haven't read this series, but I really want to. I think I'm just going to give up trying though because I can never get into it, unfortunately. Covers number 1 and 2 are definitely my favourites. Though I'm not sure which one I prefer overall. Probably number 1. I don't really LOVE any of these covers though. I think 4 and 5 are horrible, and 3 and 6 are okay, but...they wouldn't make me pick up the book.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Amanda. :)
I agree, #1 and #2 are the best of an awkward bunch methinks! They wouldn't make me pick up the story either.. shame.
DeleteI have to say, I'm not really a fan of any of them. I don't dislike them, but I would probably pass by them without a second glance at the bookstore. A cover doesn't have to be epic to lure me in, just not those. But if I had to pick one of them, I'd say #1 is the best.
ReplyDeleteDreams @ Once Upon A Dream Books
Yeah, me too hunny, it's a shame.. #1 is the best of the group though, for sure :)
