Who Wore It Better #9 - Insurgent

Who Wore It Better is a meme created and hosted by Nitzan at The Book Babes Read and co-hosted here on Beautiful Bookish Butterflies by Amanda and Stacie. We don't talk about clothing or fashion and we definitely don't talk frills and spills, we talk books and their covers and who we think has the best. This week, Amanda's talking about the covers for Insurgent, book #2 of the Divergent series. Following the recent release of Divergent in the cinema and the hype surrounding the series, I thought we could honour it's release by using this week Who It Better to look at the sequel. I'm nice like that.

The Covers

Cover #1 - UK Adult Edition
Cover #2 - French Edition
Cover #3 - Serbian Edition
Cover #4 - US Edition
Cover #5 - UK Edition

My Thoughts

This week I only chose five covers because a lot of countries chose to take on the US Edition for their covers, which is fine by me, but is also a little bit of cheating, but hey, not my job is it? Anyway, I chose Cover #1 as my favourite because I absolutely adore the colouring on the cover. I love that the background is plain black so that the focus is drawn to the logo in the centre, which don't get me wrong, I don't understand at all but it looks pretty and the I think the whole concept with these new UK covers is just beautiful. It's part of the reason I'm considering the series; I know, shame on me. Cover #2, the French Edition is much like the Divergent cover in France, but I actually really like these covers. I can take or leave or the model on the cover, but I most love the font, the divergent logo and how it works with and interacts the model. Maybe I'm alone of this, or maybe it's the black background again, hmm. Cover #3, the Serbain Edition is just so, I don't even have the words. These something about that makes it better than the US cover to me, maybe it's the fact that the city is interacting with the logo, maybe it's that the shrubbery actually looks tangible and real, or maybe it's the sense of darkness coming, but I really like it, a lot. Cover #4, the well known cover is just, blurgh. I don't like it, it looks pretty poorly put together, the city doesn't interact or look real and the I don't like the colouring of blue AND green, just one please, thank you. Cover #5, the other UK edition is just shocking. I'm sorry, but leaves, purple sky, random silhouette and a title with wings, what are you doing? What is this? Shocking, that's what, and part of the reason I was avoiding this series. We the UK did make the right decision to cover change in the end..

Your Thoughts

So what are your thoughts on these covers? What are you thoughts on the film? Read the book then watch the film, or film then read the book, or none at all? Let me know your feelings down below.

  1. I own the 5 cover and the rest in the series I own are like that. Well, only Divergent as I still refuse to get a paperback of Allegiant. I'm still pissed I wasted £8 on the Kindle copy. I actually really like the Divergent cover in that series, but do admit to not liking the Insurgent one as much; but I don't think it's completely hideous. I am biased because I own it and therefore have to love it otherwise it being on my shelf will bug me ;)

1 is a really pretty cover, I'm a little sad that wasn't out when I purchased mine because I would have bought that I think. Number 3 is a really interesting cover, never seen it before but it's really cool and I wish we had a UK cover like that. Great choice this week, my least favourite has to be number 4 though - I detest that whole set of covers on the books.

    1. The Divergent cover isn't that bad, but the rest are terrible I think, so I totally agree! If I get the series, I plan to get the first cover set, it's just so pretty and simplistic, glad we could agree. I completely hate the 4th cover set, it's just so, bland. Such a shame..

  2. I'm pretty sure I own a mis-matched series for this set... The UK adult edition of Allegiant wasn't out in time and I HAD to have the book so I got the YA one. I actually really dislike the UK YA covers too, they're colourful and there's not a huge amount wrong with them sure, but I think they look super childish and aren't "serious" enough for the story. Based purely on the cover I would not have picked these up. I don't mind the US YA covers, I've always liked the circular imagery in the middle of each one - but maybe I'm just so used to seeing them on US blogs/vlogs that they've become ingrained... The adult versions are probably my favourite. And no, I haven't seen the movie yet, and yes this deeply upsets me, and if I leave it any longer I'm gonna have to pick it up at Tesco instead of seeing it at the cinema.....boke. Great post :)

    1. I know that the Allegiant cover for the UK Adult editions wasn't out, sucks doesn't it? Even now, I don't see it around that much which is a shame, it's really nice. I do agree though, the US edition have kind of become ingrained on my mind too and I used to like them, but there's been a new trend coming out of similar looking covers and it's made me dislike it now. Thank you! :D

  3. I agree with you, Amanda. The first one looks the best and I love the simplicity. The others just don't give the same effect.

    Lovely post! <33

    1. Thank you Mel! I think the clean lines and subtle colours work well with the black too :)

  4. I love the UK Adult cover but jeez did they go wrong with the YA UK covers! I sadly own but they were a gift so I have to keep them. The Serbian edition is also really lovely! The green colours are really nice.

    1. I so have to agree, the YA UK covers look shocking in comparison! Least they were a gift though, it's not all bad. Serbian is a very beautiful cover I think, it looks more real and alluring to me, thank you for taking a look! :)

  5. I love all of them! Gah, it's so hard to pick...mmm...let me see. I think I agree with your 1 through to 3, but I'd swap 4 and 5 over, because I have the purple cover and I'm partial to it. ;) Haha!

Anywho, hiii! It's probably my first time commenting here! I'm a huge fan of Reviews From a Bookworm and she's always linkint to your blog so I HAD to check it out! I'm following now. ;) Can't wait to read more of your blog in the future! XD

    1. A few people have been partial to the 5th cover for personal reasons and I can totally understand that Cait.
Hi! Thank you for following, it means a lot to me, I hope you enjoy what you get on here :)

  6. I definitely agree with you on your number one! I LOVE these UK version!
My second favorite is number 3 - I love that the logo interacts with the city, as you yourself stated, and the coloring.
My third place is your number 4, which I think is pretty nice (though, like with Divergent, it doesn't blow my mind away or anything).
Then my number 4 is your number two, which I kind of truthfully hate (as I did when I saw this cover on the first book. I really hate that they copied that one to the dot, aside for the title...) and my fifth is your fifth. GOD I hate those old UK covers. So ugly! And the coloring is just... not okay. Still reminds me of puke!!

    1. Me too Nitzan! I want to own those copies if I do try the series, they're beautiful!
The third might even have been pushed to second since then, it's just so wonderful, I imagine the cover feels great!
I remember liking cover 2 quite a lot when I looked at it before I saw the Divergent cover, and it is a shame.
Cover 5 is just- I have to ask myself if they actually published those covers, they are shocking repulsive!
