Who Wore It Better #12 - Sapphire Blue

Who Wore It Better is a meme created and hosted by Nitzan at The Book Babes Read and co-hosted here on Beautiful Bookish Butterflies by Amanda and Stacie. We don't talk about clothing or fashion and we definitely don't talk frills and spills, we talk books and their covers and who we think has the best. This week, Amanda's talking about the covers for Sapphire Blue. Unlike Nitzan and probably the entire world, she haven't read these books yet; but she does love the covers. Shall we see why?

The Covers

Cover #1.1 - US/UK Paperback Edition
Cover #1.2 - US/UK Hardcover Edition
Cover #2.1 - Italian Paperback Edition
Cover #2.2 - French Paperback Edition
Cover #3 - Spanish Paperback Edition
Cover #4 - Polish Paperback Edition
Cover #5 - Swedish Hardcover Edition
Cover #6 - German Hardcover Edition

My Thoughts

"Eh Amanda, you do realise you've put two books in first place and two in second place?'
Definitely not just you, don't worry. Basically, I couldn't decide. There comes a time when you've stared at book covers long enough to know that one isn't taking over the other and you just need to suck it up and call a draw, so that's what I've done. Cover #1.1 and #1.2 are both in first place merely because I would gladly have either of these beautiful covers on my shelves. I know plenty of people who would have the Hardcover over the Paperback because they're fed up of 'girls in dresses' but I don't care, I think all of the US/UK Paperback Editions in this series are gorgeous, just as much as the Hardcovers, so no, I couldn't choose. I also kind of couldn't choose for second place as well, but not because I'm awkward, but because they're the exact same cover and both needed to be shown because they are equally as beautiful, even with their slight colour differences. I find the dark blues on the Italian appeal to me in a dark and mysterious why, yet the French choice of keeping the colours calm and pastel really work with the moon in the background and with how elegant the typography is. Sorry about that. Cover #3 is back to basics and is alone you'll be glad to see and I chose the Spanish cover because of the small details of clocks behind the hearts; for a time travelling book I think this is a beautiful detail and it follows the title by being blue and even the font used, I honestly find the simple design to be extremely pretty. Cover #4, the Polish cover is a little disappointing to me, and while I like that they've stuck with the blues to link in with the title, I can't for some reason get the feeling of it being better suited to a book such as Daughter of Smoke and Bone or something, but not a time travel book. Cover #5 is kind of nice; I like the simple design with the black background and no images to get in the way, but the lilac is really disappointing, I mean, it's called Sapphire BLUE for a reason, not dull purple, nice try though Sweden. Finally, Cover #6, the Germanedition, I mean, what the hell is going on? I very much dislike the style, the colours, and whole cover is just- I would not want that cover on my shelves, no sir're.

Your Thoughts

What do you think of the covers this week? Do you feel a similar pull or can you actually choose between the first two? Have you read the series, and did you like it? If I hear some good things I might be swayed to read it. Leave your thoughts and comments down below and don't forget to check out the Ruby Red covers from last week.

  1. Oooh, I'm torn! I honestly can't decide. I actually really like #6...for some weird reason! XD But #1.2 is probably my top pick. It's very whimsical. Ahhhh, it would be awesome to be a cover designer I reckon!

    1. A lot of people liked cover #6 last week, I think it just appeals to some people for some reason, maybe it's the illustrated vibe, who knows eh? It would be amazing wouldn't it, imagine the style you could come up with! :)

  2. I actually like #6 as well! The silhouettes really appeal to me. But I love the blue and gold in the first one. Man, this is such a great meme :)

    1. Thank you Emily! Nitzan created it and I offered my services to half the load, turns out it was a great decision! :)

  3. Oooh I didn't know you co-hosted a feature like this!!! I've got a rather similar new feature on my blog haha :) Great minds!

I have to say I'm loving 5 & 6! They're kind of shadow-puppety and just really intriguing and subtly ornate. Me likey!

    1. Indeed I do Allie! I'm always banging on about covers, I have another, A Rant: Book Covers, of which part 2 will be posted on Saturday, and it's just great! I think covers are a popular subject with us bloggers to be honest ;)
It seems I am the unpopular choices this week, I didn't expect 5-6 to be doing so well, but it's very interesting!

  4. Fantastic post as always, Amanda! I truly do love this feature. :) My favourite is definitely 1B - I don't necessarily love the girl at the top, but overall the cover has a very grand effect which I love - and it looks gorgeous in person. Moving on from my favourite, but second favourite would have to be 2B - while I also love 2A (they're so similar), I like how the colours in 2B are more muted. My third favourite would be #6, continuing on with #4, then #5, then #2A. I can't decide on whether I dislike #1A or #3 the most. Although I do like the peek of Big Ben that we get on cover 1A - I am so sick of girls in long gowns on YA covers. However, #3 seems very random to me and it doesn't seem to be very relatable to the story. I do like the design of it however.

    1. Thank you Ebony! You're opinions are great too, so many people like Cover #6 which I'm surprised about, so it's great to get the varied reaction! :D

  5. Your two number ones are my favourite too, I love both and wouldn't be able to choose. I love the design of 5 but not for a book cover, it's pretty but I don't think it's right for the cover of the book. The others, if I am honest, are ones that I probably wouldn't want on my bookshelf :)

    1. Oh yay! Somebody agrees with me for the first time today! :D I like the design of #5 too, but it just isn't good enough for the book I don't think, doesn't scream anything with me, but hey, at least we'd be intrigued to try it ;)

  6. I love the 1st cover. These covers are so beautiful. I have books 1 and 2 just because I really like the covers. I've heard the books are really good too.

  7. I think I might dislike the Spanish one the most. But I think US/UK are my favorites as well! Great post

    1. That is surprising, but it can look plain and a little generic, so I completely understand why. Thank you Ellie! :)

  9. SUCCESS! We've finally found the book that made you put up more than 6 covers! I was getting tired of being the only one to go overboard and link dozens of covers lol
I've got to admit, I like the paperback version too. Of this specific book, though, as I wasn't a fan of the first one, cause the model looked in an awkward position and the background wasn't the best (though, the same model on a different background with slight alterations worked SO MUCH better for me, so maybe it's not so much the model but how she was used. Nuances.)
However, due to the fact I owned the first in HC, I have the hardcover for ALL the books of the series so... :P
I agree with you that the Italian and French are pretty, but personally I like the darker tones of the Italian better. Even though I'm not exactly sure if these covers fit the book itself... (I mean, looks a lot more like a vampire/werewolf story than a time traveling one)
I agree the 4th is pretty - but doesn't work with the story. And I like 3 and 5, but I also find it lacking in relations to the story. How color blind am I that #5 looks light blue to me? LOL
As for the last one... I've got to admit it looks so much better than the German Ruby Red cover that I ended up liking it! xDD

    Great post, as always <3

    1. Oh no, when there's over 7 covers, I consider doing more, just wait for The Ask and The Answer, 11 covers for that one to show! My favourites are the first two, they are wonderful I think, and I can understand your bias towards the hardcover ;) The German edition has had more love than I expected, I'm surprised, but it's for those you like illustrated really isn't it.. I do agree with the Italian/French ones though, they do look para-, but I'm a sucker for that look, whoops ;)

  10. I'm going with #1. I love the tilted city scene behind her. It immediately sets up a question in my mind. What's she running from?
